Garden Edging Ideas

For garden bed and edging ideas, read on as multi award winning landscape designer and DIY expert Jason Hodges shares his top Garden Edging ideas for great garden beds in any backyard.

Multi purpose mowing strip
Stop turf runners and create a defined look with the versatile Lawn Edge. This product can be laid either way up, providing a small edge with a mowing strip or a higher edge for planted out gardens.

Careful curves
Curves can be a great way to create movement and life in the garden, and in many garden styles, a curve will suit the concept but beware, the turf will grow up to your garden edge and lots of curves can be problematic for mowing so consider curves carefully and be prepared to spend more time maintaining your edges.

Create a level change
Garden edging to separate the lawn from the garden bed can be achieved with a single row of edging brick pavers but to create a visual feature and a distinct level change in the garden, build your edge to two or three courses high. It will draw the eye up, adding depth and dimension to your garden. Choose Miniwall®, Natural Impressions® or Hudson Stone to achieve this look.

Best types of edging for gardens and beds

Garden edging comes in many shapes and forms, from metal garden edging, brick garden edging and concrete block garden edging through to plastic products, timber and gabion baskets. Key considerations when choosing a garden edge include; longevity as some solutions are more durable and longer lasting, and if you are going to DIY the garden edge or pay for installation. Some popular types of garden edges are:

Brick garden edging
Concrete bricks and Adbri Havenbrick pavers are excellent choices for garden edging because they come in a range of colours including black and cream that you can choose to match your homes style. Pair garden edging blocks to the colours of your roof, facades and guttering to create a seamless look.

Concrete Garden Edging Blocks
Hard wearing products that will never rot, meaning they will last a long time. Easy to DIY and some garden edge blocks can be built to 2 and 3 courses high, creating a level feature in your yard. Concrete edging blocks are great because they can be used for curved garden edging, serpentine curves, and straight walls.

Metal Garden Edging
These products are long lasting, though be sure to choose a style that is weatherproofed so it doesn’t rust. The product is very easy to install, though can be less flexible when working with curves and serpentine walls.

Garden Edging FAQs
  • Why should you make garden edging?

Garden edging is a great way to improve the look of your garden beds and even become another feature of their own. Garden edging can neatly tie different spaces together, while making it easier to mow the lawn and keep weeds out of the garden.

  • How do you edge a garden with blocks?

You can use concrete masonry blocks to create an aesthetically appealing garden edge in straight lines, with corners or gentle curves.

  • What is the best material for garden edging?

Concrete blocks, pavers or lawn edge units provide the best garden edging. They may take a little more time and effort to install, but they are strong and durable, so when installed right they will last a lifetime without rotting, rusting or falling apart.

  • Does garden edging make mowing easier?

Using products like Havenbrick or Lawn Edge as a border for your garden will create a mowing strip. This allows you to run the lawn mower over the top, so you won’t need to use the whipper-snipper every time you mow the lawn.
