There are many great reasons to build a DIY fire pit in your backyard but perhaps the two top reasons to build one in your garden are the benefits it brings to entertaining family and friends. “Fire Pits are natures TV and now more than ever before, we’re seeing the use of fire pits shift from just a comforting project for winter to becoming a year-round backyard feature for endless entertaining” says landscaping expert Jason Hodges.

There are many types of fire pits available, with different designs, shapes, and sizes. When choosing a fire pit for your family home, it’s important to consider these key questions before building a fire pit:

• Safety and location – never build the fire pit close to fences, beneath trees or hanging branches and provide suitable space from windows and doors.

• How often will you use the area, and what sort of seating will you have around the fire pit (built in walls or furniture)

• What is your budget? Fire pit options range from cheap steel dishes that could last one winter to versatile concrete blocks with fire dishes, through to high end bioethanol fire tables, each coming with a different price tag.

Jason’s Top Tip: If you are building a fire pit and have young children or pets, the best option for a backyard fire pit is to create one using concrete fire pit barrier blocks (Miniwall or Eziwall). This creates a ring “enclosure” around the fire itself, providing separation from the flame to little hands (or paws!)

“There are so many good fire pit ideas, it’s such a popular DIY project and the versatility of the fire pit options means it’s a great time to find a solution that will improve your backyard entertaining game” added Jason.
