Doable by Jason Hodges: A Show Garden You Can Actually Create at Home

Each year at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show (MIFGS), show gardens dazzle with their creativity, detail, and expert craftsmanship – but rarely do they feel doable for homeowners. That’s exactly what Jason Hodges set out to change with his 2025 show garden, fittingly named Doable.

This garden proves that beauty, function, and flair don’t need to come with a luxury price tag. Instead, Doable is built around accessible materials, DIY-friendly techniques, and a design philosophy that focuses on achievable elegance for every backyard.

Designed for Real Life

At the heart of Doable is the idea that gardens are for living in, not just looking at. Jason has created spaces to relax, gather, and play, from cozy seating zones shaded by a simple timber pergola to an open lawn area that invites both quiet moments and family fun. Reclaimed cushions and pillows bring warmth and colour to the setting without added cost, showcasing how thoughtful styling can make a big impact.

The lawn itself is a nod to classic Aussie backyards – a soft, safe space for kids to run around or adults to stretch out and enjoy the garden views. It also plays a practical design role, offering a gentle contrast to the surrounding hardscapes and lush garden beds.

High Style, Low Budget

While it looks high-end, the paved areas in Doable are actually made from budget friendly pavers. Their large format and blended tones give the illusion of something far more expensive, creating an informal, visually interesting finish. This is one of the clever ways Jason elevates affordable materials with smart design choices.

The retaining walls and pond edging carry the colour scheme throughout the garden, while a creatively offset paver pathway weaves through the space – an example of how hard and soft landscaping can work in harmony.

A Garden That Grows With You

The planting scheme may look lush and established, but Jason is quick to point out that it’s entirely achievable over time. Many of the standout features, like the Buxus balls, were grown from cuttings, and all plants used in Doable can be sourced in smaller, more affordable sizes. The message is clear: you don’t need to buy instant impact, you can grow your dream garden with a little patience and planning.

Why Doable Matters

Jason’s goal was simple: to show MIFGS visitors that creating a stunning garden at home is within reach. With practical design ideas, budget-friendly materials, and a whole lot of personality, Doable stands as a powerful reminder that a show garden doesn’t have to remain a dream.
You can make it real. You can make it yours. You can make it doable.
